π️π§ EGO AND CONSCIOUSNESS
Good morning, dear reader; today I want to talk to you about the ego and consciousness...
The ego cannot be eliminated. It is the pattern (a set of internal operating models) that is unconscious, primary, childlike, or conditioned by the past.
What is both possible and desirable—if we wish to avoid its pitfalls—is to become conscious of it: to observe it, to understand how it works (repetitive thoughts—a stream of thoughts—, invalidating feelings towards oneself and others—guilt, shame, resentment, jealousy, anger, low self-worth, impatience, emotional dependency, self-punishment, excessive euphoria, belief in being “special,” the ongoing need for praise or achievement, dependence on external emotional stimulation to fill the inner void—drugs, leeching off friends or partners—, the need to take exaggerated care of others to soothe our fears of rejection or abandonment, etc.).
When the ego is observed—though not eliminated—it is exposed, loses power, and we can begin to make the effort to change those patterns into more adult or realistic ones in the present moment. At the very least, we can begin to take distance from them, or let go of their pull to be repeated. Because that is the ego’s fuel: repeating conditioned patterns and the resulting drama, discomfort, or suffering.
“When you observe, you reclaim consciousness trapped in the mind and can more clearly see the dysfunction and irrationality of 'the voice in the head' that causes so much self-created suffering.”
(Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth. 2005)
