π³THE PROBLEM TREE
Good morning, dear reader; today I’m going to tell you a story...
THE PROBLEM TREE
The carpenter I had hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished his first hard day of work. His electric saw broke down and cost him an hour of work, and then his old truck refused to start.
While I was driving him home, he sat in silence. Once we arrived, he invited me to meet his family. As we walked toward the door, he paused briefly in front of a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands.
When the door opened, a surprising transformation occurred. His sun-tanned face was full of smiles. He hugged his two young children and gave his wife a kiss.
Later, he walked me back to my car. As we passed the tree, I felt curious and asked him about what I had seen him do earlier. “Oh, that’s my problem tree,” he replied.
“I know I can’t avoid having problems at work, but one thing is certain: my problems don’t belong in the house, not with my wife or my children. So I simply hang them on the tree every night when I get home. Then in the morning, I pick them up again.”
“The funny thing is,” he added with a smile, “when I come out in the morning to collect them, there aren’t as many as I remember hanging the night before…”

The "Problem Tree" is a touching story that illustrates the importance of separating work life from family and personal life. The carpenter, despite facing a day full of setbacks and difficulties, demonstrates wisdom and self-control by "hanging" his problems on the tree before entering his home. This metaphor teaches us several valuable lessons:
-
Separation of Roles: The carpenter understands that work-related problems should not affect his family life. By leaving his worries on the tree, he allows himself to be fully present and enjoy time with his loved ones, free from the burdens of the day.
-
Emotional Release: Touching the tree’s branches symbolizes a physical act of letting go. This ritual helps him release tension and refocus his mind on the more positive aspects of life.
-
Renewed Perspective: When he picks up his problems the next morning, he finds that many of them seem less significant. This suggests that with rest and distance, our worries can lose their weight and gain clarity, allowing us to face them with a calmer, clearer mind.
-
Protection of Relationships: Keeping work-related stress out of the home protects family relationships from unnecessary tension. It fosters an environment of love and support within the household, which is essential for everyone’s emotional well-being.
This story invites us to reflect on how we manage our own problems and daily stress. Maybe we don’t all have a physical "problem tree," but we can each find our own way to release tension and maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life. By doing so, we not only improve our quality of life but also strengthen our relationships and emotional well-being.
What do you think about how the carpenter handles his problems? Is there a practice you use in your life to maintain a similar balance?
Sending you a heartfelt hug, and don’t forget to share this.
